Report: US mulls sanctions ‘to deter Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’

WASHINGTON, Dec 6 (PRIME) -- The U.S. authorities are currently studying the possibility of imposing sanctions against Moscow to deter Russia’s alleged ‘invasion’ of Ukraine, the CNN channel reported on Monday, citing anonymous sources.

The sanctions may target “the close circle of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin,” as well as Russia’s energy companies. The measures also include disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT system.

Russia has repeatedly dismissed the Western and Ukrainian accusations of ‘aggression,’ saying that it does not threaten anyone or intend to attack anyone, and that statements about an alleged ‘Russian aggression’ are used as a pretext to place more NATO military equipment near Russian borders. The Russian Foreign Ministry earlier noted that such statements by the West are both ridiculous and dangerous.
